The objective of this research was to find out whether there was influence
of using three-step interview technique towards students’ speaking abilit y
at tenth grade of SMAN 1 Kota Serang or not. In obtaining the data, the
researcher used true experimental design used two classes. The population
of the research was the tenth grade students at SMAN 1 Kota Serang and
the sample was taken by using cluster random sampling. Class X MIPA 7
as the control group which is consisted of 42 students and class X MIPA 8
as the experimental group which is consisted 42 students also. Pre-test and
post-test were given to the experimental group and control group. The
treatment was given only to an experimental group for two meetings. The
researcher used content validity and inter-rater reliability in order to make
the instruments were valid and reliable. In testing the hypothesis, the
researcher used t-test formula to find out the influence of using three-step
interview technique towards students’ speaking abilit y at tenth grade of
SMAN 1 Kota Serang. The calculation showed that the result of is
higher than (5.443 ≥ 1.99) with the significance 0.05 (5%). It can be
concluded that there is influence of using three-step interview technique
towards students’ speaking ability at tenth grade of SMAN 1 Kota Serang.
