AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE USED IN THE MOVIE “THE GREEN MILE” BY STEPHEN KING
This research is aimed to analyze the use of figurative language and the message conveyed in The Green Mile movie (1999). The researcher analyzed kind, and meaning of figurative language used in the movie. The researcher analyzed the message which tried to be conveyed from the script writer of the movie. In this research, the researcher applied descriptive research. This research mainly used qualitative analysis approach. In this research, the primary data was taken from all the words, the phrases, and the sentences on the dialogue of The Green Mile movie (1999) which contain figurative language. After analyzing The Green Mile movie (1999), the researcher got 107 (onehundred-seven) figurative languages in the dialogue of the movie. In this research, the researcher found ten kinds of figurative language. In comparative, there are metaphor 24.29% (26 sentences), simile 14.95% (16 sentences), personification 2.80% (3 sentences), and metonymy 5.60% (6 sentences). In imagery, there are symbol 22.42% (24 sentences), and synecdoche 1.86% (2 sentences). In contradictory, there are paradox 1.86% (2 sentences), hyperbole 18.69% (20 sentences), litotes 3.73% (4 sentences), and irony 3.73% (4 sentences). It can be concluded that the mostly used figurative languages is metaphor and symbol. It is different with previous research from Lutan from STAIN Salatiga, with the mostly used figurative language being simile and symbol.
