This study aimed to analyze the types of code mixing and to find out the reasons for using code mixing in Instagram post used by the students at the eighth semester of English Education Department. The research used descriptive qualitative research content analysis design since it focused on a phenomenon of code mixing. In this study, the researcher only focused on Indonesian – English code mixing in Instagram post. Moreover, the data were collected by observing ten students’ Instagram account, documenting the students’ Instagram post and interviewing the participants by using interview questions. The collected data were analyzed by using Muysken’s theory (2000) and Hoffman’s theory (1991). The researcher found two of three types of code mixing, there were Insertion and Alternation. Based on the analysis of the data, the result of the study showed the types of code mixing used by the students, there were consist of 33 (82,5%) Insertion, 7 (17,5%) Alternation, and 0 (0%) Congruent Lexicalization. The dominant type of code mixing used by the students was Insertion with the total number 33 (82,5%). Meanwhile, the researcher found all the reasons for using code mixing. The result showed, there were consist of 11 (47,82%) code mixing for talking about particular topic, 2 (8,70%) code mixing for quoting somebody else, 2 (8,70%) code mixing to express solidarity, 4 (17,40%) code mixing for expressing group identity, 1 (4,34%) code mixing for repetition used for clarification, 1 (4,34%) code mixing for interjection, and 2 (8,70%) code mixing for the intention of clarifying the speech content for the interlocutor. The dominant reason for using code mixing used by the students was talking about a particular topic with the total number 11 (47,82%).
