AN ANALYSIS OF GENDER ON COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES USED BY ENGLISH AS FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNER IN ELEVENTH GRADE AT CAHAYA MADANI BANTEN BOARDING SCHOOL

The objectives of this research were to find out the types of communication strategies that were mostly used by the participants and which gender frequently used communication strategies. This research was conducted in eleventh Science one grade of Cahaya Madani Banten Boarding School that used English as foreign language in their daily communication in that school. This research used qualitative research method and content analysis as research design. To obtain the data the researcher used one on one interview as the instrument. The participants that consisted of 10 female and 10 male used 5 until 8 minutes to talk and the utterances from the participants interviewed were transcribed and analyzed into twelve types of communication strategies from Dornyeis theory. The results of the research showed that the highest type of communication strategy was using filler or hesitation devise type that found 1.003 times (70.58%) used by the participants and the least type used was all-purpose type that found once (0.07%). Males were the gender that frequently used communication strategies that used the entire types (100%) of communication strategies while 10 types (83%) of communication strategies were used by females.
