Improving Studentsí Reading Comprehension in Narrative Text by Using Picture Series at the Eight Grade of SMPN 4 KOTA SERANG

This research aims to reveals whether Picture Series can improve students‟ reading comprehension in narrative text at eight grade of SMPN 4 Kota Serang after implementing Picture series. This research was conducted by implementing the Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was conducted in two cycles. The subject of this research was eight grade students of SMPN 4 Kota Serang in the academic year 2016/2017 with total number of students was 35 students consist 13 males and 22 females. The data of the study were in the forms of qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were obtained by observing the teaching and learning process and interviewing the students of class VIII D and the English teacher. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were acquired conducting through the pre-test, and the post-test at the end of each cycle. The instrument using in data collecting are test, observation and documentation. The result of this study found that picture series had given improvement to students‟ reading comprehension. The result showed that in the pretest, the average score of the students is 58.85. However, the average scores 78.81 on cycle 1 and 83.82 on cycle 2. Referring to the result of the research, it can be concluded that use Picture Series is applicable to improve students‟ reading comprehension achievement, the teaching and learning process, and students‟ activities.
