AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS SPEAKING ANXIETY IN EFL CLASSROOM AT THE TENTH GRADE OF SMAN 5 KOTA SERANG

This research was designed to investigate students speaking anxiety in EFL Classroom at The Tenth Grade of SMAN 5 Kota Serang. The objectives of the research were to find out the level of students speaking anxiety, to find out the causes of students speaking anxiety and to reveal their strategy to solve their anxiety. This research used qualitative descriptive method. There were 40 students of the tenth grade in SMAN 5 Kota Serang who participated in this research. The data was collected using Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (designed by Horwitz et al., 1986) questionnaire and semi-structured interview. The data was analyzed by using Horwitz Anxiety Scale Criteria, theory from Young (1991) and theory from Kondo and Ying Ling (2004). The researcher found most of the students were at high anxiety (35%). In addition, there were students at moderate anxiety (32.5%) and low anxiety (32.5%). The findings show the causes of students anxiety in speaking English were personal and interpersonal anxiety, instructor-learners interaction, classroom procedure, and language testing. Most of the students chose positive strategies to reduce their anxiety by preparation followed by relaxation, positive thinking, peer seeking and resignation as the negative strategy. The findings show that anxiety could affect students performance in learning English, especially in speaking. Then, it is important for the teacher to acknowledge the students anxiety and for the students to know how to reduce it.
