AN ANALYSIS OF ONOMATOPOEIA TRANSLATION BY THE SIXTH SEMESTER STUDENTS OF ENGLISH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OF UNIVERSITY OF SULTAN AGENG TIRTAYASA

The objective of this research is to find out the students’ strategies in translating onomatopoeia and to measure the quality in this context; acceptable of students’ in translating onomatopoeia at sixth semester students of English Education Department of University of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa. The researcher conducted this research by applying qualitative method with content analysis as a design of research. In this research, the researcher conducted a test of translation to collect the data of students’ translation. The students’ translation strategies were analyzed using the adaptation of Newmark’s translation categorization. Meanwhile, the acceptable was assessed using Nababan’s translation acceptable instrument. The result of this research reveals that students used naturalization, cultural equivalent, and through translation in translating onomatopoeia. The most dominant strategies used by the students is Cultural Equivalent with 69%. Meanwhile, naturalization is 18%, through translation is only 8% and 5% is not translated. From the acceptable, majority of students acceptable translate the onomatopoeia with percentage of 51%. Less acceptable translation is 14%, not acceptable is 30%, and 5% is not translated.
