AN ANALYSIS OF INTERLINGUAL INTERFERENCE IN NARRATIVE TEXT TRANSLATION BY SIXTH SEMESTER STUDENTS AT ENGLISH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT UNIVERSITY OF SULTAN AGENG TIRTAYASA

The objective of this research was to identify the Interlingual interference occurred in narrative text translation by sixth semester students‟ of English Education Department UNTIRTA. This research used qualitative research method by implementing content analysis as the design. The researcher took about 30 students from English Education Department, University of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa as the subject of this research. To obtain the data, the researcher used translation test as the instrument. The interlingual interference was classified into three level; lexical (word for word translation, collocation error and pronoun error), morphological (tense error and lack of subject-verb agreement) and syntactic level (article error, word order error and preposition error). The result of this research reveals that the number of Interlingual Interferences in lexical level is 588 (42.30%). Consisting of Word for word translation (250 errors/17.99%), collocation errors (87 errors/6.26%) and pronoun errors (251 errors/18.06%). Besides, interference in morphological level is 345(24.82%), there are tense error (319 errors/22.95%) and Lack of Subject-Verb Agreement (26 errors/1.87%). The last, the number of Interlingual Interferences in syntactical level 457 errors (32.88%) consisting Article Errors attain 141 errors (10.14%), Word order Error attain 215 errors (15.47%) and Preposition Error attain 101 errors (7.27%). Based on the findings, students are expected to improve their English skill in order to produce a good translation and also for the lecturer to be more aware about students‟ interference in translation.
