THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS‟ FREQUENCY IN LISTENING TO ENGLISH SONGS AND THEIR PRONUNCIATION MASTERY AT X IPS III OF SMAN 6 KOTA SERANG

This research focused on finding out the correlation between students‟ frequency in listening to English pop-songs and their pronunciation mastery in segmental features; vowel and consonant. To answer the research question, the data about students‟ frequency in listening to English songs was collected through closed-ended questionnaire and students‟ pronunciation score was collected through narrative text reading. The research sample was 33 students of X IPS III at SMAN 6 Kota Serang. The analysis of closedended questionnaire showed that mostly (52%) of students listen to English songs frequently, 21% of students listen to English songs very frequently, 12% of students listen to English songs occasionally, 9% of students listen to English songs rarely, 6% of students listen to English songs very rarely, and no one of students never listen to English songs. The analysis of pronunciation test showed that 57.6% of students got high score (86-100), 27.2% of students got moderate score (61-85), and 15.2% of students got low score (10-60). The analysis of Pearson product moment formula revealed that R coefficient correlation value was 0.91 that higher than R table value; 0.35. It means that there was a significant correlation between students‟ frequency in listening to English songs and their pronunciation mastery. In conclusion, songs were potential to use as pronunciation teaching technique.
