THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTSí VOCABULARY MASTERY AND READING COMPREHENSION AT THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTSí IN SMPN 5 CILEGON IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2015/2016

The objective of this research was to find out the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension at the second year students of SMPN 5 Cilegon. The research design was correlational research. The population of this research was all of the eight grade students of SMP 5 Cilegon which consist of 260 students. One class which consists of 32 students as sample. The researcher used purposive sampling in choosing the sample. In collecting the data the researcher using test. The test were consisted of two test, the vocabulary test and reading comprehension test in form multiple choice. All of the tests consisted of 25 item for each test. The data collected was analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment Correlation technique. From the data analysis, which has been analyzed by using SPSS of windows version 16 programs, it was obtained that rxy is 0.912 and df=N-nr is 30. Based on the acquisition value of rxy, it can be seen that rxy (0.912) was higher than rtable at significant level 5% (0.349) and 1% (0.449). The statistic hypothesis stated: If rxy>rtable means there is significant correlation and Ha is accepted, Ho is rejected; If rxy<rtable means there is no significant correlation and Ha is rejected, Ho is accepted. It can be concluded that that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected, and there was significant correlation between the two variables with contribution percentage 16.8%.
