THE IMPLEMENTATION OF ROLE PLAY TO IMPROVE STUDENTSí SPEAKING ABILITY IN TENTH GRADE AT SMK DWI PUTRA BANGSA

This research was conducted to accomplish three objectives, there are; to find out the process of implementing role play to improve students‟ speaking ability and to find out the improvement of students‟ speaking skill after implementation of role play. The use of this research is to apply role play in speaking class and show the improvement of students‟ speaking ability. This research used qualitative research which applied classroom action research (CAR) as research methodology. The researcher decided X TKJ-4 at SMK Dwi Putra Bangsa Pandeglang which consisted of 21 students as subject for this research. This research was conducted in two cycles, each cycle consisted of four steps, there were; planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The instruments used in collecting the data were observation, test and documentation. The result of the process of implementing role play showed that there was a good progress in confidence, giving attention to the researchers‟ explanation and attracted to the other groups who perform role play in front of class. The students also give a good response towards the implementation of role play. Even though, at the beginning they were lack of confident and shy to speak in front of class because they were afraid of pronouncing the word incorrectly. The students also thought that it was shameful when they do something wrong or they did some ridiculous thing in front of the class. The result of student‟s average score in pre-test was 58.66, and in post-test of cycle 1 was 62.19 and in post-test of cycle 2 was 71.38. It can be concluded that the implementation of role play could improve student‟s speaking ability. The student‟s improvement was increased 16.78% from pre-test to post-test of cycle 1 and 43.76% from post-test of cycle 1 to post-test of cycle 2 or 60.54% from pre-test to post-test of cycle 2.
