AN ERROR ANALYSIS ON THE USE OF SIMPE PAST TENSE IN RECOUNT TEXTS AT THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPN 2 BALARAJA

The objectives of this study are to analyze and describe error found in senior high school students’ answer of simple past tense. The writer used content analysis design research method. This study was held at SMPN 2 Balaraja with a number of 40 students as the participants of study. They were all at eighth grade of 8A classroom. The study implemented three instruments in an attempt to collect information that is suitable for answering main focus of the study. Documents and questionnaire were gathered from all participants of study, but interview was delivered to one of English teachers. The total errors made by the students in this study were 248. It has found that the students made some errors based on Corder’s theory (1973). The type of error that frequently appeared in students’ answer was the error of selection. It was suggested for all English learners to master themselves with vocabularies to enrich their grammatical range and to avoid errors while they are working on English written text by keep practicing and create a comfortable, interactive or enjoyable learning environment.
