THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING GUESS WORD TECHNIQUE TOWARD STUDENTSí VOCABULARY MASTERY AT THE SEVENTH GRADE OF SMPN 1 MALINGPING

The objective of this study is to find out the empirical data concerning whether guess word as a technique is effective towards students’ vocabulary mastery at the seventh grade of SMPN 1 Malingping. This research was conducted at seventh grade of SMPN 1 Malingping on the second semester of academic year 2015/2016. The researcher used quantitative design by using true experimental design. In this research, all the students at seventh grade of SMPN 1 Malingping were taken as population. By using the cluster random sampling technique, the writer had 60 students as the samples taken from 320 first grade students. The samples were divided into 2 classes, VII- C as the control group and VII-A as the experimental group. Each group consists of the same number of students, 30 students. The hypothesis test used independent t-test.The result of calculation showed that in the significance degree of 5%, the value of t-test (to) > t-table (tt) (0.51 > 1.671). According to the criteria of the test, so there is a significant difference between students’ vocabulary mastery by using guess word and without guess word. It means that guess word is effective and applicable to used as a technique towards students’ vocabulary at the seventh grade of SMPN 1 Malingping towards students’ vocabulary mastery.
