THE INFLUENCE OF READING SHORT STORY TOWARDS STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY AT THE EIGHTH GRADE OF SMPN 11 KOTA SERANG

The objective of this research is to find out the influence of reading short story towards students’ vocabulary mastery at the eighth grade of SMPN 11 Kota Serang. The researcher used quantitative approach by implementing quasi experimental design as the research method. There were two groups used in this research which were experimental and control group. The Population of this research was the eighth grade students of SMPN 11 Kota Serang. Two classes were chosen as the sample of research by cluster sampling. The two classes were VIII C as the experimental group and VIII D as the control group. There were 35 students in experimental group and 38 students in control group. The researcher used test as the instrument of research. The tests were pretest and posttest which consisted of 20 items of multiple choices in each test. After collecting the data, the researcher found there is a significant influence of reading short story towards students’ vocabulary mastery at the eighth grade of SMPN 11 Kota Serang. It can be seen from the value of t-test which was higher than the value of t-table (4.514 > 1.66) with level of significance at 0.05 and 71 as the degree of freedom. It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, or in the other words, there is a significant influence of reading short story towards students’ vocabulary mastery at the eighth grade of SMPN 11 Kota Serang.
