IMPROVING STUDENTSí READING COMPREHENSION ON NARRATIVE TEXT THROUGH STORY MAPPING STRATEGY AT TENTH GRADE OF SMA NEGERI 5 KOTA SERANG

This research aimed at describing the process of improving students’ reading comprehension on narrative text and to know the improvement of students’ reading comprehension on narrative text through story mapping at tenth grade of SMA Negeri 5 Kota Serang. The subject of this research was 33 students in class X-4 of SMA Negeri 5 Kota Serang. This research used classroom action research (CAR). The researcher conducted two cycles in classroom action research. The researcher did a preliminary research in the beginning of the research to identify the problem faced by the students. The researcher also gave a pre-test to know the ability of the students in reading comprehension. After that, the researcher conducted cycle I and cycle II. In each cycles the researcher did activity based on the concept of CAR; planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. While doing CAR, the researcher collaborated with the English teacher in observing the research and to know the process of improving students’ reading comprehension on narrative text through story mapping. The researcher asked the students to do a post-test in each cycles. Finding of this research showed that there was improvement on students’ reading comprehension on narrative text. The result of the pre-test and post-tests showed the significant improvement. The minimal mastery level criterion (KKM) in SMA Negeri 5 Kota Serang was 75. The average score of students’ pre-test were 53.4 and there were only four of the students (12.12%) who passed KKM. The average score of students’ post-test I were 72.7 and there were fourteen of the students (42.42%) who passed KKM. The average score of students’ post-test II were 80.6 and there were twenty-six (78.78%) of the students who passed KKM. It means the criteria of success was achieved. In addition, the result of observation sheet and questionnaire showed there were improvement of students’ positive responses in reading comprehension on narrative text through story mapping strategy. In conclusion, the students’ reading comprehension on narrative text has improved and the students were interested in reading comprehension on narrative text through story mapping.
