THE ANALYSIS ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF COMMUNICATIVE APPROACH IN SPEAKING CLASS AT ELEVENTH GRADE OF SMK AL-AROBI

The objectives of the research were to describe the process of teaching and learning toward communicative approach in speaking class and to describe the teacher’s and students’ role within the communicative language teaching at eleventh grade of SMK Al-Arobi. The subject of the research was all the students of eleventh grade of SMK Al-Arobi which consisted of 188 students. Each classes consisted of 38 students, the researcher observed one class. It consisted of 38 students. The researcher used qualitative research to conduct her research. In this research, she collected the data by observing the process of teaching and learning English in the classroom closely. The researcher also collected the data by interviewing the English teacher, and giving questionnaire to the students. The result of this research based on the theoretical principles of the communicative approach is that the process of teaching and learning toward communicative approach in speaking class used dialogs. The teacher informed the students about the topic material that was given mostly in a form dialogs, and the teacher asked the students to practice the dialogs in pair. In this process cannot be implemented optimally, it caused because the students in the process of English language teaching always passive and uncommunicative. It described when the teacher asked them to do the dialog in pair. They always read the text of the dialogs and looked at their books. The teacher’s and students’ role within the communicative language teaching it is the students as the subject, while the teacher as the facilitator who helped students in exploring their language skills. In conclusion, the implementation of communicative approach in the process of teaching and learning English speaking in SMK Al-Arobi had not been optimally. It should be supported by the three related aspects to achieve the objective of teaching and learning English; they were: teacher, students, and school.
