AN ANALYSIS OF CODE-SWITCHING IN TEACHING ENGLISH SUBJECT AT THE TENTH GRADE OF SMAN 1 CIRUAS

The objective of this research is to find out the type of code-switching that used by the teacher while teaching English subject at the tenth grade of SMAN 1 Ciruas. There are two major points that this paper attempts to make. First, to analyze the type of code-switching based on Hoffmans theory (1991). Second, the teachers reason of using code-switching while teaching English subject. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method in this study and conducted observation, recording and interview to collect the data. After observing and analyzing the whole data, the researcher analyzed the types of code-switching by Hoffmans theory, and presented the data in this research. The types of codeswitching by Hoffmans theory used by the teacher were: (1) Inter-sentential switching 37 times; (2) Intra-sentential switching 22 times; (3) Emblematic / tag switching 4 times. In accordance with the result of the research, a structured interview regarding the code switching used was conducted to know the reason of teachers code-switching; it was used to clarify the meaning for the students. At the first the teacher used English to explain the material but then switched it into Bahasa Indonesia to clarify the meaning for the students because the students lack of vocabulary. The result of the research, it could be found that there were three types of code-switching that used in teaching, and the factor that caused code-switching is repetition used for clarification.
