THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING PICTURE DICTATION TOWARDS STUDENTS‟ LISTENING ACHIEVEMENT AT THE SEVENTH GRADE OF SMP NEGERI 2 CILEGON

The aim of this study was to investigate whether the picture dictation is effective towards students‟ listening achievement or not. This research was conducted in SMP Negeri 2 Cilegon. The method of the research was quasi-experimental study. The population of the research was all students at the seventh grade that consist of nine classes and two classes were chosen as the experimental class and the control class. The sample was 76 students. The research results showed those two classes had similar score in the pre-test. The mean score of the experimental class was 59.23 and the mean score of the control class was 57.5. After the treatment was done, the post-test result showed that the mean score of experimental class was 80.39 and mean score of the control class was 73.97. It meant that the students‟ score in the experimental class was higher than the students‟ score in the controlled class. To know the effectiveness of this technique, ttest formula was used. The result showed t-value 2.47 was higher than t-table 1.99 (2.47 > 1.99). So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Based on the result, it can be concluded that picture dictation was effective towards students‟ listening achievement.
