## THE EFFECTIVENESS OF QUESTION-ANSWER RELATIONSHIP STRATEGY ON STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION IN NARRATIVE TEXT

The objective of this research is to measure the effectiveness of QARs on Students’ reading comprehension achievement in narrative text at eighth grade of SMPN 14 Kota Serang in the academic year of 2015/2016. The populations of this research were 80 students. This research was conducted quantitatively by quasi-experimental design in the form of nonequivalent control group design. The research was carried out in two classes, they are the controlled class and the experimental class. The data were gathered through tests which consisted of the pre-test and the post-test. The researcher took 8D as the experimental class that has 40 students and 8E as the controlled class that has 40 students. The result of the study showed that Question-Answer Relationships Strategy is effective to use in teaching reading comprehension of narrative text. The means score of the experimental class (84.00) is higher than the controlled class (78.50). From the analysis of t-test from comparing the pre-test and post-test results, it is obtained that the value of 𝑡0 = 3.700 and degree of freedom (df) is 58. In the table of significance 5%, the value of degree of significance is 1.676. Comparing those values, the result is 3.700 > 1.676 which means 𝑡0 (t observation) is higher than 𝑡𝑡𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒. In other word, the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the Null Hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Therefore, teaching reading comprehension in narrative text by using QARs is effective.
