IMPROVING STUDENTSí ACHIEVEMENT IN READING COMPREHENSION ON NARRATIVE TEXT THROUGH PREVIEW, QUESTION, READ, REFLECT, RECITE, AND REVIEW (PQ4R) METHOD AT EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPN 21 KOTA SERANG

The objectives of the research were to describe the process of using Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite, and Review (PQ4R) method and to know the result of improvement students‟ achievement in reading comprehension by using PQ4R method at the eighth grade of SMPN 21 Kota Serang. The researcher used Classroom Action Research (CAR) as a research methodology. This research was conducted in two cycles which consisted of two meetings in every cycle. The researcher used pre-test and post-test to collect the quantitative data. Meanwhile, the researcher used observation sheet, and documentation for collecting the qualitative data. Subject of the research was the students of VIII D of SMPN 21 Kota Serang which consisted of 37 students. The students‟ average score of pre-test was 46.35. In the first cycle, the students‟ average score of posttest 1 was 70.67. Whereas, in the second cycle, the students‟ average score of post-test 2 was 77.02. The researcher found that the students got an improvement in reading comprehension. In conclusion, PQ4R as a method of teaching learning process can improve students‟ average score in reading comprehension at eighth grade students of SMPN 21 Kota Serang.
