ANALYSIS OF VOCABULARY LEARNING STRATEGIES AT THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPN 3 KOTA SERANG

The objectives of this research were to describe  students’ vocabulary learning strategy, to know the best of students vocabulary learning strategy and to know the reason in choosing the vocabulary learning strategy. The researcher observed 36 participants of 8th grade of Junior High School students in SMPN 3 Kota Serang. The methodology of the research was qualitative research and was presented in case study. Qualitative research is investigation approah, because the researcher collects the data directly face to face and interacts with people at the place. The instruments for this research were close ended questions consisted of 30 statements, interview directly, and documentation. The result showed that vocabulary learning strategies used by students were belief about vocabulary learning (68%), metacognitive strategies (71%), contextual guessing (61%), dictionary strategies (82%), note taking (84%), repetition (51%), and active use (68%). Thus, it could be concluded that there were several strategies that used by students. The most strategy used by students at SMPN 3 Kota Serang was note taking strategy because it was helpful, faster to understand and able to know more vocabularies. The researcher hopes that note taking strategy can be applied for all students who wanted to learn vocabulary.
