IMPROVING STUDENTSí READING COMPREHENSION IN DESCRIPTIVE TEXT THROUGH TALKING STICK AT THE EIGHTH GRADE OF SMPN 10 KOTA CILEGON

The objectives of the research are to describe the process of teaching reading through talking stick and to know the students‟ improvement in reading comprehension through talking stick. The subject of the research was the eighth grade of SMPN 10 Kota Cilegon. There were 35 students. The researcher carried out three steps. The first step was the pre-test. The second step was the action. The action consisted of two cycles. The difference between these cycles was on topic of material and the method in activity. Each cycle consisted of teaching and learning process and a test. The last steps were the post-test. The instruments used test, observation sheet, and documentation. The test was to measure the students‟ improvement. The researcher also made notes. It was used to observe the situation of the class during each activity of this research and in documentation included the students‟ test, lesson plan, and observation sheet. The result of the data showed that there is improvement of the students‟ achievement in the pre-test and post-test. The students‟ achievement in pre-test is 51.14 and the percentage of the minimum score criteria is 25.71%. The average score of students‟ achievement in the first cycle is 62.28 and the percentage score is 54.28%. Meanwhile, the average score of students in the second cycle is 76,28 and the percentage of the minimum score criteria is 82.85%. The improvement is around 14.00. Based on this data, the researcher concluded that talking stick were able to improve students‟ reading comprehension.
