THE INFLUENCE OF THINK-PAIR-SHARE TECHNIQUE IN TEACHING READING COMPREHENSION AT EIGHTH GRADE OF SMP NEGERI 3 BALARAJA

The objective of the research was to find out whether the use of think-pair-share technique had significant influence toward students‟ reading comprehension skill. The method of the research is quantitative approach with true experimental design. The populations of the research were students at the eighth grade, they were 72 students as a sample. The two classes of the population were taken as the sample through clustering random sampling, namely VIII-C as experimental group and VIIIB as control group. The control class received the traditional method, regular reading. The experimental class received think-pair-share as technique. Both classes were given pretest and posttest to find out students‟ reading skill before the treatment and after the treatment. The instrument of the research that used to collect the data was Narrative text. The number both of test (pre-test and post-test) were 20 items in multiple choice. The researcher used T-test formula to analyze the students‟ pretest and posttest in control and experimental class. The result of the research showed that the t-test score between control class and experimental class is 2.277. The distribution table with significance level 0.05 and the value of significance level 0.01 It showed that tcount > ttable 0.05> ttable 0.01 (2.277 >0.05 >0.01 ). Therefore, the null hypothesis was refused and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. The mean score of pretest in control class was 41.81 and it became 59.31 at the posttest. Meanwhile, the mean score of pretest in experimental class was 51.67 and it became 62.50 at the posttest. So, it can be concluded that there was a significant influence of think-pair-share technique in teaching reading comprehension at eighth grade of SMP Negeri 3 Balaraja.
