IMPROVING STUDENTSí SPEAKING SKILL IN MAKING ORAL DESCRIPTION BY USING CUE CARD AT EIGHTH GRADE IN SMPN 1 CILEGON

The aim of this research is to investigate the improvement of students’ speaking skill in oral description by using cue card as the media. This research used classroom action research method.The main subjects of this research were 35 students of class VIII B at SMPN 1 Cilegon, academic year 2014/2015. This research conducted in two cycles with two meetings in the first cycle and two meetings in the second cycle.The technique used to collect the data were qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative data were gained from the observation sheet and documentation. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were gained from the speaking performance tests that were conducted before the action of implementation and at the end of every cycle.It is found that speaking skill of the students who were taught by using cue card were improving. The research finds that the mean score in the pre-test which is62.43. After giving treatment, the improvement could be seen in the mean score of post-test 1 which is 72.25. Then, the mean score of post-test 2 is 81.43. Finally, the result shows there is an improvementby using cue card toward students’ speaking skill at the eighth grade of SMPN 1 Cilegon.Cue card did not only gave the eighth grade students more chances to practice, but also gave them more exposure to speak their English. Therefore, cue card made eighth grade students to speak up and describe their ideas in speaking English confidently without worrying to make mistake.
