THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING HAND PUPPET TOWARD STUDENTSí SPEAKING SKILL AT SEVENTH GRADE OF SMPN 10 SERANG

The students were lack confidence in speaking English. Thus, the writer used hand puppet as media to solve the problem. The objective of this research was to find out the effectiveness of hand puppet to improve students’ speaking skill at seventh grade of SMPN 10 Serang. The research used quantitative research method. It used the true experimental design as research method. There were two groups used in this research. The samples were selected by using cluster random sampling technique. The samples of this research were students of SMPN 10 Serang, 74 students selected for the experimental and control group. The 37 students of class VII/I were selected as the experiment group and the 37 students of class VII/H as control group. The data was collected by using pre-test and post-test. Then, the post-test of both groups would be compare to find out the effectiveness of hand puppet as media in teaching speaking skill. The research found that the result tcount was 4.198. Then, the degree of freedom was 72 and the ttable for df= 72 was 0.677.  The tcount was higher than ttable or 4.198> 0.677. It means that Ha was accepted and the null hypothesis was rejected. It could be concluded that the use of hand puppet was effective to improve students’ speaking skill. Thus, the use of hand puppet in the class in teaching speaking skill was highly encouraged.
