THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING SHORT STORY TOWARD STUDENTS READING COMPREHENSION IN NARRATIVE TEXT AT THE EIGHTH GRADEOF SMPN 4 KOTA SERANG

The objective of the research was to find out whether there is effectivenes of using short story toward students reading comprehension in narrative text at  eighth grade of SMPN 4Kota Serang. A true-experimental research design was used. The population of this research was the eighth grade of SMPN 4Kota Serang in academic year 2015-2016. The researcher used simple random sampling to take the sample. The sample of this research was78 students in which 39students as control class and 39 students as experiment class. The instrument of this research was test. The test was divided into two parts; there were pre-test and posttest.Short Storywas administered for experiment class and conventional for control class. The research result indicated that there was improvement between pre-test and post-test result. It could be seen from the pre-test mean score in which experiment class got 65,00 and control class got6,51. After having the treatment, the mean score of post-test experiment class was 79,87 and control class was 69,62. The researcher attempted to use t-test to analyze the data. The research result indicated that the post-test score showed tcountis more than ttable(4,972 > 1,990). It means that the Ho (null hypothesis) was rejected and Ha (alternative hypothesis) was accepted. Based on the data analysis above, the researcher concluded that there was significant effectiveness of using short story toward students‟ reading comprehension at the eighth grade of SMPN 4 Kota Serang.
