THE EFFECTIVENESS OF STUDENT TEAMS ACHIEVEMENT DIVISION (STAD) TECHNIQUE IN IMPROVING STUDENTSí READING COMPREHENSION AT THE EIGHTH GRADE OF SMPN 18 KOTA TANGERANG

The objective of this research is to find out whether the use of Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) technique is effective in improving students reading comprehension at the eight grade of SMPN 18 KOta Tangerang. The researcher used quantitative research by implementing the quasi experimental design as research method. The population of this research wass all of the students at the 8th grade of SMPN 18 Kota Tangerang which consisted of 400 students, and the sample that was used in this research was the students of 8.2 as experimental clss and 8.4 as control class. The researcher used 80 students as sample from both calsses. The classes were chosen by cluster random sampling from the ten classes. By using this method, the researcher conducted the experimental in order to find out the effectiveness in experimental class after treatment. The instrument that used by the researcher was reading test. After collecting the data, the researcher analyzed them by using t-test. The result of this research showed Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) techique was effective in improving students reading comprehension on experimental class. It can be seen from the result of t-test. The result of hypothesis testing showed that the significance level in experimental and control class is 0.00 while the significance level based of default SPSS v.16.0 is 0,05. It showed that the significance level in experimental and control class is less than the significance level based on default SPSS (0.00<0.05). Therefore, the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. So, it can be concluded that STAD techique was effective in improving students reading comprehension at the 8th grade of SMPN 18 Kota Tangerang.
