AN ANALYSIS ON STUDENTS ERROR IN WRITING ELLIPTICAL CONSTRUCTION (A STUDY AT ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMAN 13 KABUPATEN TANGERANG IN ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2014/2015)

This research aims to find out types of errors made by the eleventh grade students
and the sources of errors in writing elliptical construction. To achieve the
objectives of the research, the researcher conducted qualitative research
specifically through case study. The research was conducted in SMAN 13
Kabupaten Tangerang with 41 students of XI IPA 1 as the subjects of the research.
In collecting the data, the researcher used documentation to collect students’
works in writing elliptical construction and interview to figure out the sources of
errors. Meanwhile, in identifying and classifying the errors occurred, the
researcher used surface strategy taxonomy. In analyzing the sources of errors, the
researcher used the concept of interlingual and intralingual error. The result of this
research showed that the highest error occurred is error of auxiliary with 87.86%
and the lowest is error of misordering with 1.23%. The highest source of students’
errors in writing elliptical construction is ignorance of rule restriction with
74.02% and overgeneralization with 2.60%. It can be concluded that most of
students made error of auxiliary in writing elliptical construction with most
caused by their ignorance of rule restriction or intralingual error.
