IMPROVING STUDENTSí WRITING NARRATIVE TEXT BY USING GENRE-BASED APPROACH AT EIGHTH GRADE OF SMPN 9 KOTA SERANG

The objectives of this research were to describe the process of improving students’ writing narrative text by using Genre-Based Approach and to know the improvement of the students’ writing narrative text after being taught by using Genre-Based Approach at eighth grade of SMPN 9 Kota Serang. The method used in this research was classroom action research in which the researcher observed and gave treatments for teaching narrative writing. The subject of this research was 39 students in class VIII A of SMPN 9 Kota Serang. In this research, the researcher gave pre-test and post-test to collect the data. The students’ average score of pre-test was 46.26, the students’ score of post-test I was 67.69, and the students’ score of post-test II was 86.46. So, the students’ score percentage from pre-test to post-test I improved 46.15 % and the students’ score percentage from post-test I to post-test II improved 48.72 %. The students got the improvement from the minimum score of English subject that was 70. Furthermore, the students felt confident in writing narrative text. In conclusion, Genre-Based Approach was effective to improve students’ writing narrative text.
