IMPROVING STUDENTSí VOCABULARY MASTERY BY USING CROSSWORD PUZZLE AT THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPN 1 JAYANTI TANGERANG (A Classroom Action Research)

The objective of the research was to find out whether crossword puzzle can improve students’ vocabulary mastery at the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Jayanti. Also, to find out how is the process of teaching vocabulary mastery by using crossword puzzle mastery at the eighth grade students SMPN 1 Jayanti. The writer used qualitative design by using Classroom Action Research. Qualitative  research  is  primarily an  inductive  process  of organizing data  into categories and identifying patterns (relationship) among categories. It involves an interpretative, naturalistic approach to it is subject matter and gives priority to what the data contribute to important research questions or existing information. Cycles  are characteristics  in doing Classroom Action  Research.  In  this  action research, the writer used two cycles. Each cycle consists of three meetings. There are  four activities  in  this  side,  namely:  planning,  action,  observation  and reflection. The subject of the research was the students of VIII B class in the year 2013/2014 of SMPN 1 Jayanti which consists of 43 students. The activities of teaching learning in the cycle 1 and 2 were good. Through crossword puzzle, the students felt enjoy in learning vocabulary and had intrinsic motivation to study. Based on the result of the study, the students could enrich their vocabulary mastery by using crossword puzzle.  It was  supported  by the average result of pre-test 1 was 57.79, then in post-test 1 was 73.48; the average result of pre-test 2 was 58.72, and 75.11 in post-test 2. Therefore,   teacher   should   choose   an   appropriate   way  and   effective technique in teaching to get students’ interest. Finally, the writer concludes that crossword puzzle can be used to improve students’ vocabulary mastery.
