AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS MOTIVATION IN SPEAKING ENGLISH AT THE ELEVENTH GRADE OF MAN BALARAJA

The objectives of this research were to find out the factors affecting students’ motivation in speaking English and level of students’ motivation in speaking English. The research methodology used in this research was qualitative approach. The researcher highlighted the use of descriptive method in order to explore the phenomenon of the students’ motivation in speaking English. She applied case studies by directly observing the participants in the small-scales settings. The data was gathered by using observation, questionnaires and interview. The research subjects were the 41 students at the eleventh grade of MAN Balaraja. In analyzing the data, the researcher found the findings. She obtained the data by observing the students’ learning process, distributing the questionnaire and conducted interview. Next, the researcher looked for supporting data from libraries and international networks. After that, she reread and comprehended all of the data, classified and the researcher concluded the data descriptively by her own words. The result of this research showed that the factors affecting students’ motivation in speaking English were classroom environment, fantasy, locus of control, curiosity, self-efficacy, anxiety, challenge and learned helplessness. Every factors were related each other. In the other hand, there were 5 students (12%) who belong to the high level of motivation, 27 students (66%) who belong to the medium level of motivation and 9 students (22%) who belong to the low level of motivation.
